What is being proposed
This application seeks planning permission for the removal of existing pebbledash render and the application of new stucco render to the front elevations of Nos. 42, 44, 46, 48, and 50 Abingdon Road. The stucco will be coursed at ground floor level to match adjacent properties at Nos. 40 and 52. The existing pebbledash is in visibly poor condition and not in keeping with the established character of Abingdon Road where bricks and stucco are the norm. The original buildings were constructed in the mid-19th century with a mix of stock brick and stucco detailing. The ESSA Appraisal describes this section of Abingdon Road as having “banded stucco at ground floor, stock brick to the upper floors and then united by a cornice running the length of the terrace.” Unfortunately, the application of the pebbledash means that the bricks cannot be exposed. For this reason stucco is a more appropriate finish than pebbledash.
